Photonic Surface Engineering for Safety-Critical Industry

About Photoform

Photoform is a photonics-based surface engineering technology developed by Thunderstorm Solutions AS. The technology uses digitally controlled laser processing to create functional surface properties directly in polymer and composite materials.

What the Technology Does

Photoform enables multiple surface functions through structure-driven laser modification, including:

• Electrostatic dissipation

• RF transparency

• Abrasion resistance

• Hydrophobic and anti-smudge behaviour

• Grip enhancement

• Durable marking and identification

These functions are achieved without the use of conductive coatings, metallic fillers, or complex multi-layer assemblies.

Current Focus

Photoform is currently being developed and validated for use in safety-critical devices operating in explosive and hazardous environments. The work focuses on industrial reliability, manufacturability, and certification-aware design constraints, including compatibility with wireless communication and long-term durability requirements.

Why It Matters

Conventional surface solutions for hazardous-area equipment often create trade-offs between safety performance, wireless functionality, and mechanical robustness. Photoform integrates multiple surface functions into a single, digitally defined surface architecture, reducing system complexity while supporting scalable industrial manufacturing.

Technology Status

The technology is under active development, progressing from applied research toward pilot-level industrial implementation through national and European innovation programmes.
